lagging, blue-noses, and culture clash: June 21

During every World Cup I get to the point where I have to stop looking for a couple of days; today was that day. I just couldn't quite get interested, and frankly aside from tomorrow morning's matches in Group E there's nothing too interesting until the weekend.

So in the meantime I'd like to point out why I despair of Glasgow Rangers fans when they harbour people like the idiot who smacked a seven year old for wearing an England shirt, then punched and kicked the boy's father. Bad enough that the boy's got a Kiwi father and a mother daft enough to buy him an England shirt without adding random assault to his burdens. What happened to subtle taunts like calling people useless English c**ts?

However, Mr. Tolerance 2006, Glasgow Division, has competition in the form of an Aberdonian who pulled a handicapped driver out of his car and blackened his eye. Nice one.

Incidentally, the two links are about the same story, but the second one from the Glasgow Daily Herald omits the claim that that the wain-smacker was wearing a Rangers shirt… Both assaults are being classified as "racist" which is why I cannot seriously consider going back to a country where they think that varying shades of pail in conflict is something like lynching in Alabama…

On to the culture clash: Fox College Sports was showing a replay of last season's USC – Fresno State game, so I watched the third quarter of that after the Telemundo rebroadcast of Portugal – Mexico (most of which I slept through). Seeing the game, including Reggie Bush's stop-on-a-dime-and-head-for-a-touchdown-on-the-other-side-of-the-field-play, eopitomized what I think to be the retrospective grand narrative of the season: that USC had a phenomenal offense, a porous defense, and were playing on the absolute edge all season. They were within 2 yards of disproving that defense wins championships, but there you go… or rather, there Vince Young went.

Anyway, onwards and upwards. I am looking forward to the US – Ghana game tomorrow although I think that Red White and Blue tears will be shed at the end of it — but I won't be upset to be proven wrong. As for Italy – Czech Republic, perhaps world football will get lucky from the self-sacrifice of Vratislav "Lurch" Lokvenc when he provides a simultaneous countervailing foul on Fabio "Vicious Prick" Cannavaro and the two explode into anti-matter.

Last but not least, I would like to leave you with two questions:

1) If I point out the stereotypical dentistry issues, will I be accused of a racially-motivated assault?

2) Well really, who wouldn't?

  1. the worst part is that the guy with the rangers jersey was in edinburgh. there were days when such things would not stand. back in the salad days, the idiotic thugs in edinburgh would be donning a hearts or hibs jersey. alas…
